Wine Making Hydrometer Basics

A hydrometer is an indispensable tool in the arsenal of the winemaker. Hydrometers are used in various stages of winemaking, and by learning what you say, hydrometer, you can refine your wine making techniques.

Basically, the heavier or denser a liquid is, the higher the hydrometer floats. When a batch of wine is the juice of "thick" with sugars. When the fermentation, the juice comes up, goes out of the thick, viscousConsequence of a thinner liquid with more alcohol. Thus, a hydrometer will float at different levels, throughout all the fermentation, as the liquid goes from "thick" in "thin".

Density of a scale on the hydrometer. This scale is based on the weight of water. To have a hydrometer in the water drives a specific gravity of 1.000, if you are a batch of wine is a typical specific gravity reading of around 1,080. At this point, the juice is thicker than 8 percentWater. When the fermentation is complete, the reading will be about 0.995, so that the sugar was converted into alcohol and the juice is now thinner than water.

Another scale on your hydrometer is potential alcohol (PA). To get to potential alcohol readings, you need the PA at the beginning of fermentation and measured again at the end. An example might help here. Suppose you measure the PA of your juice at 14% if at the beginning of fermentation. This reading means that "potential"You can 14% alcohol from your juice. But not all of the fermentation process using up every bit of sugar. If you have a reading is completed during the fermentation and the PA is 1%, then your wine is 13% alcohol, the difference between the two readings.

Another measure of the most hydrometers is Brix, also known as balling. This is usually by experienced winemakers and wineries commercial use. The Brix scale shows the percentage of sugar in the juice on the weight. For example, if you have aReading of 22 on the Brix scale, means that it is composed of from 22% sugar by weight together. Wineries will be able to find yourself on this scale, produce the juice that the proportion of alcohol they want to.

A hydrometer is a very useful tool for the homemade wine. The more you one, you are more familiar with the different scales and how powerful the information they provide.
